Liu Chun Hai
Chinese,b. 1966
Liu Chun Hai was born in 1966 in Heilongjiang, China's northernmost province. After graduation from the printmaking department of Harbin Teacher Training School, Liu worked as a printmaker and teacher for the next nine years. In 1986, he started experimenting with oil painting, exploring subjects related to the Cultural Revolution, mostly in the form of female soldiers and propaganda posters from that momentous era. In 2001, he returned to printmaking and worked on a series of images including Mao as well as different women. Liu also drew upon his ambivalent memories of childhood. All the images were printed on newspaper or silkscreens, often employing copper-plate techniques combined with ink painting. Enriched by a fascinating past, Liu Chunhai has settled into a productive life as a professional painter and printmaker.
