Pan De Hai
Chinese, b. 1956
Over the past twenty years, one of the most established Chinese artist Pan De Hai has been famous for creating the image of “Corn Men” in his works. Other active artists in the 1980s, the name of Pan De Hai is also associated with an influential group of artists in the history of Chinese Contemporary Art, that is "Southwestern Art Group", which emerged after the "New Age" Art Exhibition.
Born in 1956 in Jilin Province, China. Pan De Hai graduated from the Fine Art Department of Northeast University, Changchun, Jilin Province. For an artist who sets to exploring the passions of life and the questions in essence, his works reflect what the real world is like and people’s interests.
Numerous works by the artist have been sold at auctions, including “Triptych: Opened Corn-back Hill” sold at China Guardian Auctions Co. and “Break Through: Chinese AvantGarde Art in the 80’s” in 2014 for US$1,492,240.
He formed "Southwestern Art Group" with Zhang Xiaogang, Mao Xuhui after the "New Image Exhibition" touring around in Shanghai, Nanjing and Chongqing in 1986.
Pan De Hai has involved in several major exhibitions in the history of modern and contemporary Chinese art, including " Modern Chinese Art Exhibition" held at National Art Museum of China in 1989.
“Post-89 New Art Exhibition" held in Hong Kong in 1993, and "Mao and Pop Art" Exhibition held at National Gallery of Australia.
His work "Opened corn-back Hill" fetched an auction record of US$1.49M at China Guardian Auctions Beijing in 2014.
"Corn Man" not only shows the connections with Pan De Hai' s memory of his early years, but also shows the influence of “Southwestern Fine Arts”. The "Corn Man" Series contain magical beauties and rhythms. Meanwhile, present a complex composition with rich meanings and sumptuously decorative colours, approximate to mysterious scenes at a religious ceremony.
